NVR Not Detecting IP Camera: PoE Subnet, ONVIF and Activation Fixes by Brand
Most "NVR can't see the camera" cases are a subnet or protocol problem, not a dead camera. Dahua's NVR manual puts PoE-port cameras on their own segment starting at 10.1.1.1, separate from the LAN. On Hikvision camera firmware from V5.5.0, ONVIF has to be enabled with its own user. Hikvision and CP Plus also keep a separate ONVIF user. Check segment, protocol, then credentials.

Nothing here was tried on hardware.
PoE ports, protocols and add-camera rules by brand
| Brand | PoE-port network | Protocols offered when adding | ONVIF / credentials rule | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dahua | Separate "Switch" segment, on by default, starting 10.1.1.1. Set at Main Menu > Network > Switch; do not put it in the NVR's LAN segment. Do not connect a switch to a PoE port. Third-party PoE cameras need ONVIF and DHCP on | Private, ONVIF or other listed manufacturers | NVR's own ONVIF account (default admin, Main Menu > ACCOUNT > ONVIF User) is separate from the camera login you enter when adding |
Dahua NVR V1.3.0 |
| CP Plus | PoE cameras auto-initialised with the NVR's password and email. Segment not printed | CPPLUS, ONVIF, Auto Connect | ONVIF add uses HTTP port 80, RTSP 554; private uses TCP 25001. NVR ONVIF user admin, Manage > Account > ONVIF User |
CP Plus NVR manual, 29 Jul 2026 |
| Hikvision | Internal NIC for PoE ports; change it at System > Network > TCP/IP. The PnP guide's screenshot shows 192.168.254.1 (an example, not stated as default). Plug-and-Play cameras cannot be edited | HIKVISION (SDK port 8000), ONVIF | Third-party PnP camera: IP in the Internal NIC segment, last octet above 100, password 12345 or the NVR admin password, 802.3af/at, ONVIF |

| Uniview | Two NICs, external and PoE, which "must be set up to different IP segments". One camera per PoE port | Private (Uniview cameras only), ONVIF, Custom (RTSP) | Match camera and NVR clocks; some cameras need their separate ONVIF user | PoE NVR V1.0; third-party guide |
| TP-Link VIGI | Optional Network Isolation (Settings > Network > Network Isolation): PoE cameras go to 192.168.253.x, unreachable from the LAN. NVR restarts to apply | TP-Link Protocol, ONVIF | Isolation works only with cameras added via TP-Link Protocol. Third-party: enable ONVIF on camera first; "Not Certified" = enter credentials | FAQ 4672; FAQ 5054 |
Where brands differ
- Hikvision camera on a non-Hikvision NVR. Per the V5.6.5 camera manual, ONVIF sits under Integration Protocol, needs Enable ONVIF ticked, and uses its own user list (up to 32). The ONVIF users are cleared when the camera is restored. Hikvision's how-to says firmware below V5.5.0 has ONVIF on by default with the camera login; from V5.5.0 you enable it and add the ONVIF user yourself. Uniview's third-party guide, for a camera with this menu layout, adds: pick "Digest&ws-username token" and turn off Illegal Login Lock.
- Dahua or CP Plus camera on another NVR. Both document ONVIF as enabled by default. For a camera whose menu reads Setting > Network > Access Platform > ONVIF (the CP Plus LQ-series layout), Uniview's guide says to turn off ONVIF Authentication. That makes the camera answer ONVIF without a password. Use it only on an isolated camera VLAN, or try the ONVIF user first (CP Plus page).
- Activation. Hikvision cameras ship inactive and must be activated (SADP, web or NVR). Dahua NVRs list such cameras under Uninitialized, CP Plus under Not Initialized. CP Plus's Plug and Play adds only cameras "on the same subnet", initialising them first. VIGI says many cameras need activation, password and ONVIF set before any NVR can add them.
- Prama. No NVR manual is published on pramaindia.in. Prama firmware uses Hikvision-style version strings (cheat sheet). Following Hikvision's steps is a guess, not documented. See the Prama page.
Fix order
- Ping from the NVR side. Uniview's guide requires the camera and NVR to be "pingable to each other". A camera on a PoE port sits in the PoE segment; a laptop on the office LAN will not see it (VIGI says pinging an isolated camera from the LAN "will fail").
- Match the segment. A camera with a static IP from another site will not land in the PoE segment by itself. Re-address it to the PoE segment (Hikvision: last octet above 100) or set DHCP (Dahua third-party cameras).
- Pick the protocol. Use the private protocol only for same-brand cameras. Otherwise use ONVIF on the camera's HTTP port (80 by default in CP Plus and Uniview docs), or Custom/RTSP as fallback.
- Use the right account. Hikvision, CP Plus and some third-party cameras keep a separate ONVIF user. The CP Plus NVR manual lists "Wrong username/password" and "Unsupported ONVIF version" as causes of "cannot add".
- Check the clock. ONVIF logins carry a creation timestamp (ONVIF Core v26.06, §5.9.5); Uniview puts matching date and time first.
- Online but black. CP Plus lists "Unsupported encoding" for blank live view. Uniview suggests H.264 or turning off U-code. Dahua and CP Plus NVRs offer H.265 Auto Switch, which switches newly added cameras to H.265; Dahua says the stream value is halved. Leave it off if an analytics box downstream cannot decode H.265 (retrofit guide).
What breaks in a factory
- Office LAN vs PoE segment. Maintenance plugs a laptop into the plant switch, runs SADP or ConfigTool, sees nothing, and concludes the camera is dead. Cameras on an NVR's PoE ports live behind it. Work from the NVR GUI or its web page.
- Daisy-chained switches on PoE ports. Dahua and Uniview both say not to connect a switch to an NVR PoE port. Extra cameras on a far shed go to a switch on the NVR's LAN port, in the LAN segment.
- Long runs. Hikvision's V4.1.70 manual offers a PoE Long Distance mode for 100–300 m. It caps such cameras at 6 MP and requires CAT5e or CAT6 to 250 m, CAT6 beyond. Short Distance is the default.
- PoE budget in hot panels. Dahua's V4.4.7 manual lists 50 W total for 4-port, 120 W for 8-port and 15 W per port on some models. Add IR, heaters or PTZ and a camera may brown out and drop (PoE budget). CP Plus lists "PoE power issue" and "loose RJ45" for cameras going offline.
- Power cuts. A camera whose clock resets after an outage can fail ONVIF login until NTP or the NVR resyncs it. Point NTP at a server inside the plant.
When to call the installer / what to ask the vendor
Call the installer if the camera is not visible even from the NVR's own search on its own PoE port. Ask the vendor for the PoE segment default on your NVR firmware, whether ONVIF ships on or off, and which ONVIF version the NVR supports. For many-site rollouts, the troubleshooting guide covers the rest.
Mama reads a plant's existing cameras over RTSP or ONVIF and tells the owner how long each machine sat idle, so a camera the NVR can reach is usually one Mama can read too. More at askthemama.com. Leave an email or phone in the form below.
FAQ
Why doesn't my Dahua camera show up when I assign the correct IP? A common ipcamtalk question. Per Dahua's V1.3.0 manual, PoE-port cameras belong in the NVR's Switch segment (from 10.1.1.1), not the LAN. A LAN address on a PoE port will not connect.
Can I put Hikvision PoE cameras on my office LAN instead of the NVR's internal network? Asked on ipcamtalk. Hikvision's V4.1.70 manual lets you disable a PoE channel and add a camera manually over the network. Users report this frees the camera to live on the LAN via a separate switch.
What is the difference between the NVR IP address and the Internal NIC address on a Hikvision NVR? From an ipcamtalk thread. The LAN address is how you reach the NVR. Per Hikvision's Plug&Play guide, the Internal NIC is the PoE-side segment cameras must sit in; its screenshot shows 192.168.254.1 as an example.
My third-party camera shows "Not Certified" on a VIGI NVR. What now? Per VIGI FAQ 5054, edit the camera and enter the username and password set during its first-time setup. Check ONVIF is enabled on the camera.
