RTSP URL and ONVIF Cheat Sheet for Indian CCTV Brands
Hikvision cameras stream at rtsp://ip:554/Streaming/channels/101 (sub-stream 102). Dahua and CP Plus use /cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0, Uniview uses /media/video1 and TP-Link VIGI uses /stream1. All use port 554. On Hikvision firmware V5.5.0 and later, Hikvision's how-to has you enable ONVIF and add a separate ONVIF user; on Dahua and CP Plus it is on by default.

ONVIF counts are device listings in a camera category, with conformance in the last 3 years, retrieved 7 Oct 2026. Profile S covers H.264 streaming; Profile T adds H.265 and richer events.
Prama and Sparsh RTSP paths. Neither vendor prints one. Prama's firmware advisory uses Hikvision-style version strings (for example, "V5.8.3 build230808"), so trying the Hikvision path first is a reasonable guess, not a documented fact. Safer: add the camera over ONVIF and let the client ask it for the stream URI.
Matrix fixed cameras. The /main path comes from a PTZ manual. For older SATATYA bullets, users report /11, /onvif1 and /ch0_0.h264 on port 554 (ispyconnect, crowdsourced). Matrix's own wiki only gives the generic rtsp://ip:rtspport/URLofcamera.
Where brands differ
- Hikvision and Prama. Prama sells PT-NC cameras with Hikvision-style firmware numbering. If Prama inherits Hikvision's V5.5.0 behaviour, someone has to enable ONVIF and create a separate ONVIF user before an NVR or analytics software can connect. That is an inference, so check on site. Hikvision also clears ONVIF user settings when the camera is restored, per its manual. A Hikvision NVR uses port 8000 for its own protocol and HTTP port 80 for ONVIF.
- Dahua and CP Plus. The CP Plus TS41PL3 manual uses the same RTSP pattern,
subtypemeanings and "ONVIF is enabled by default" wording as Dahua's Web 5.0 manual. The defaults differ, though. CP Plus uses default IP 192.168.1.250, TCP 25001 and UDP 25002. Dahua uses 192.168.1.108, TCP 37777 and UDP 37778. Full detail is on the CP Plus RTSP and ONVIF page. - Others. Matrix, VIGI and Uniview each use their own paths. Matrix, Uniview and VIGI all document ONVIF on HTTP port 80.
Generic connection checklist
- Put your laptop in the camera's subnet. Hikvision, Matrix and Uniview all say the PC must be on the same subnet or segment for setup or discovery.
- Find and activate the camera with the vendor tool (SADP, ConfigTool, EZTools, VIGI Config Tool), set a strong password, then give it a static IP or a DHCP reservation.
- Test both stream URLs in VLC before touching the NVR or analytics box.
- For ONVIF, enable it where needed, create the ONVIF user (Hikvision and CP Plus keep it separate from the web login), then add the camera on HTTP port 80.
- Set NTP and the 50 Hz anti-flicker or video standard.
What breaks in a factory
- VLAN and PoE switch subnets. Discovery tools search the local segment. A camera on a separate camera VLAN, or on an NVR's built-in PoE ports, can be invisible to a laptop on the office LAN. Route RTSP and ONVIF between VLANs, or run discovery from inside the camera VLAN. Size the switch's PoE budget too (PoE sizing).
- 50 Hz flicker. Indian mains is 50 Hz. Hikvision exposes a 50 Hz/60 Hz Video Standard, and Dahua and CP Plus an Anti-flicker setting with a 50 Hz option. Left at 60 Hz under tube lights or LED high-bays, a camera can show rolling bands that motion-based analytics may read as change.
- Power cuts and the clock. ONVIF login uses a nonce and a creation timestamp, and the server rejects tokens without them (ONVIF Core v26.06, §5.9.5). Uniview's NVR guide puts matching camera and NVR clocks first. After an outage, set NTP to a server reachable inside the plant, then check the clocks.
- H.265 vs H.264. Uniview's third-party guide says that if a camera comes online but shows no video, switch compression to H.264 or turn off U-code. Check your analytics decoder before standardising on H.265 (retrofit guide).
- Sub-stream for analytics. Hikvision describes the sub-stream as the low-bandwidth option for live view. It is enough for "is the machine running", too coarse for reading a gauge. Choose per camera and size storage separately (storage calculator).
- Remote access. Hikvision's manual tells you to port-map 80, 8000 and 554 for internet access. Avoid that on a plant network (feed audit checklist).
When to call the installer / what to ask the vendor
Call the installer if a camera won't show up in its own vendor's tool from inside its VLAN. Ask the vendor for three things: the RTSP path for your exact model and firmware, whether ONVIF ships on or off, and the ONVIF Declaration of Conformance. For Sparsh, ask which company name its ONVIF conformance is filed under.
Mama reads existing cameras over RTSP or ONVIF to tell the owner how long each machine sat idle. Learn more at askthemama.com. Leave an email or phone in the form below.
FAQ
Can a Hikvision NVR record a Dahua or CP Plus camera? Yes, over ONVIF. Dahua and CP Plus document ONVIF as on by default. On the Hikvision NVR, choose ONVIF and use the camera's HTTP port (80 by default). If ONVIF fails, Uniview's NVR guide describes a fallback: add the camera as a custom RTSP stream instead. Users report motion events may not pass (ipcamtalk).
Why can't my NVR find a Hikvision camera over ONVIF? A common ipcamtalk question. Per Hikvision's how-to, firmware below V5.5.0 accepts the camera login for ONVIF; from V5.5.0 you enable it under Configuration > Network > Advanced Settings > Integration Protocol and add a separate ONVIF user.
Main stream or sub-stream for AI analytics?
Use the sub-stream (102, subtype=1, stream2, video2) when you only need presence or motion. Use the main stream when the task needs detail.
