The 10-Minute Morning Camera Check for Factory Owners: 6 Views, What Normal Looks Like
A factory owner can check yesterday on camera in about 10 minutes by looking at six views in a fixed order: recorder status, bottleneck start-up, shift handover, quiet hours, material staging and dispatch. Per Hikvision's NVR manual (V4.1.70), playback runs at up to 256x, so a shift scrubs in minutes (checked 14 Oct 2026).
Last checked: 14 Oct 2026. By the Mama Editorial Team, for the owner, not the installer. This is a daily production habit; for a one-time check of a new system, use the commissioning and acceptance checklist.

The check at a glance
| Step | Time (min) | View | The one question | Normal looks like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0–1 | Recorder screen | Did every camera record all night? | All channels live, no disk or video-loss warning, clock matches your phone |
| 2 | 1–3 | Bottleneck machine, shift start | Did the first machine start on time? | First cycle within your own start-up allowance after the bell |
| 3 | 3–5 | Same machine, shift change | How long was it idle between shifts? | Gap no longer than the handover you agreed |
| 4 | 5–7 | Main line, quiet hours | Did it run when the plan said it would? | Motion marked on the timeline where you planned running |
| 5 | 7–9 | Material staging / WIP area | Was material waiting for the line, or the line for material? | Next lot staged before the current one ends |
| 6 | 9–10 | Dispatch bay | Did planned trucks leave? | Loading started and finished within the slot |
Write your "normal" for steps 2–6 once, on one sheet, and compare against it.
The six views, step by step
1. Recorder screen: did it record
Look at the recorder's own screen first. Hikvision's manual lists alarms for video loss, illegal login, abnormal recording, HDD error and HDD full (V4.1.70, PDF p. 9); exceptions can be set to show an "event hint" in live view under System > Event > Normal Event > Exception (PDF p. 126). CP Plus places disk health under Manage > Storage > Disk Check > Health Monitoring (CP Plus manual §4.3.8.1, PDF p. 81).
Normal: no warning, every tile has a picture, and the on-screen clock agrees with your phone within a minute. A disk warning ends the check; call the maintainer. After a power cut, see what to check before formatting a disk.
2. Bottleneck machine at shift start
Pick the machine that sets your output (press, loom, extruder or packer) and play yesterday's first 30 minutes of the main shift at high speed.
Normal: the first cycle comes within the start-up allowance you wrote down. A late start repeated daily is the cheapest capacity a plant has; the daily shift report shows how to put a rupee figure on it.
3. The same machine at the shift change
Jump to the handover. On Hikvision, hold and drag on the time bar for a fast view, or hover over the time bar for thumbnails (Hikvision V4.1.70, PDF pp. 115–116).
Normal: the gap between the outgoing shift's last cycle and the incoming shift's first one is no longer than the handover you agreed.
4. Main line during quiet hours
This is where the timeline colours earn their keep. CP Plus and Dahua manuals both describe the playback time bar as green for regular recording, yellow for motion detection, red for external alarm, blue for intelligent events and purple for POS events (CP Plus PDF p. 134; Dahua V1.3.0 PDF p. 204).
Normal: yellow (motion) blocks during the hours you planned running, and none where nobody should be working. Long green-only stretches in a planned shift, or yellow at 2 a.m. in a closed section, deserve a closer look.
5. Material staging and WIP
Look where material waits for the bottleneck (rack, floor marking, trolley lane) at mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
Normal: the next lot is staged before the current one ends. An empty staging area beside an idle machine means the line waited for material, not the other way round.
6. Dispatch bay
Play the loading slot for the day's main despatch.
Normal: loading starts and ends inside the planned slot. An idle truck usually points upstream, to packing or paperwork.
NVR playback tips that keep it to 10 minutes
| Shortcut | Hikvision (V4.1.70) | CP Plus (undated manual) | Dahua (V1.3.0) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top speed (x) | Up to 256 (PDF p. 106) | "Fast play 1, fast play 2 and more", no figure (PDF p. 136) | "Fast play 1, fast play 2 and etc.", no figure (PDF p. 206) |
| Cameras played together (channels) | Up to 16, synchronous at 1080p (PDF p. 8) | 1, 4, 9 or 16 (PDF p. 134) | 1/4/9/16 window split in playback (PDF p. 19) |
| Jump to motion only | Smart playback marks motion, line-crossing or intrusion in red; single-channel only (PDF p. 106) | Smart motion detection: human or motor vehicle (PDF p. 136) | Smart search on a drawn zone of a 22×18 grid (PAL); single-channel; motion detection must be on (PDF p. 209) |
| Skip the quiet parts | "Do not Play Normal Videos" plays only smart and searched video, at 1x (PDF p. 114) | Not described | Not described |
| Bookmark for tomorrow | Tags; max 64 per video file (PDF p. 109) | Tags; can play from N seconds before the tag (PDF p. 138) | Tag playback (§4.6.5, PDF p. 210) |
| Last few minutes | Instant playback of the last 5 minutes from live view (PDF p. 105) | Not described | Not described |
Three habits matter more than features. Scrub on the sub-stream (Hikvision allows the switch in playback, PDF p. 114). Tag anything odd for tomorrow. Never change the recorder's clock to "fix" a timestamp: Dahua warns that random time changes mean "the recorded video cannot be searched" (V1.3.0, §4.1.4.1.2, PDF p. 125).
Where brands differ
Hikvision documents the most morning-friendly shortcuts: 256x, skip-normal-video and instant playback. CP Plus and Dahua share the same colour-coded time bar; a maximum speed figure was not found in either published manual (checked 14 Oct 2026). Menus vary by firmware.
What breaks in a factory
- Motion search sees fans, not work. Ceiling fans, flapping curtains, belt-driven shafts and light flicker all trigger motion. Draw the smart-search zone over the machine's working area, not the whole frame.
- Motion-only recording hides idle time. If a channel records only on motion, a stopped machine leaves a gap, not footage. Check the record type; Hikvision lists Continuous, Motion, Alarm and combinations (PDF p. 86).
- Clocks drift. If the recorder is minutes off, step 3 lies. Setting network time is a one-off fix for the installer.
- Retention runs out quietly. MeitY's advisory to government departments says to specify storage "in terms of storage duration (number of Days)" (advisory OM 11 March 2024, para xv). Know your number with the days-per-4 TB table.
Machines and flows, not people
This check looks at machines, material and trucks in aggregate. It does not rank, time or follow individual workers, and the footage should not be used that way. Under the DPDP Act, 2023, footage of identifiable workers is personal data. Section 5 requires a notice of the data and its purpose when consent is sought; employers often rely instead on the employment "legitimate use" in section 7(i). Most duties under the DPDP Rules commence on 14 May 2027, per Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (checked 14 Oct 2026). Either way, workers should know what is recorded and why; see the worker CCTV notice under DPDP. Keep cameras out of washrooms, changing rooms and rest areas.
When to call the installer
Call when step 1 fails (disk warning, black tile, wrong clock) or a critical machine sits behind a pillar. Ask: is every channel recording continuously, is the recorder on network time, and who holds the admin password? The same MeitY advisory says to change default passwords "immediately upon installation" (para vii).
Where Mama fits
Ten minutes samples only six moments. Mama reads the cameras a plant already has over RTSP/ONVIF and every morning sends the owner a short plain-language note on where machines stood idle yesterday, counting machines and flows, not people. Leave an email or phone in the form below.
FAQ
How do I check yesterday's CCTV footage on my NVR? Open Playback (not live view), select the camera and yesterday's date in the calendar, then fast-forward or drag the time bar. Hikvision's manual describes this flow (V4.1.70, PDF p. 105).
Why does my NVR show no recording for some hours? Usually motion-only recording, a failed or full disk, or a power cut. Hikvision's manual also lists an incorrect system time as a cause of "no record file found" (V4.1.70, PDF pp. 210–211). Check the recorder's warnings first, then the record schedule.
