Did the Night Guard Do His Rounds? Checking Guard Tours With CCTV vs RFID, QR Apps and a Register (₹, India)
How do you know the night guard didn't sleep? As of 15 Oct 2026, Indian vendor pages list an RFID guard-tour wand at ₹9,900–14,550, but it only proves the wand touched a tag. The CCTV you own can show a person passing a checkpoint at a stated time, with no extra hardware. Strongest set-up: every checkpoint inside a camera's view.

Key takeaways
- A paper patrol register proves only that someone wrote a time in a book. The guard controls the pen.
- An RFID or NFC guard-tour wand proves the device touched a tag at a time. It does not prove the guard looked at anything on the way.
- A smartphone patrol app adds GPS and photos. QR-Patrol's published price starts at $59 a month for 1–3 guards (checked 15 Oct 2026).
- Your NVR can already answer "did anyone walk past the store door between 1 and 3 a.m.?" Hikvision documents a smart-playback mode that plays motion at normal speed and the rest at 16× speed.
- The cheapest strong control is a checkpoint tag mounted where a camera sees it. Each scan then has a clip behind it.
- India's private security law, PSARA 2005, lets the state authority cancel an agency's licence over repeated gross negligence by its guards. Recorded evidence of missed rounds is what you hand the agency.
Four ways to verify rounds, compared
The table below compares what each method proves, what it costs, and how it is beaten. Prices are as listed on the named pages on 15 Oct 2026. They are listing prices, not quotes; GST treatment varies by page.
| Method | What it proves | Cost (₹, listed 15 Oct 2026) | Weak point | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper patrol register | A time was written at the gate | Cost of a register | Filled in from the cabin; guard controls the record | — |
| RFID guard-tour wand (offline, USB download) | The wand read a fixed tag at a logged time | ₹9,900 (In4solution, 125 kHz, 60,000 records); ₹13,500 (eSSL GP-RFID-102, Right Vision); ₹14,550 (Goldline) per reader | Tag can be unscrewed and carried; data seen only after download | In4solution, Right Vision, Goldline |
| GPRS/SIM guard-tour reader | Same, sent online during the round | ₹28,972 per reader (Goldline, fingerprint, 4G SIM) | Needs mobile signal inside sheds; tag still movable | Goldline |
| Smartphone patrol app (QR/NFC/beacon) | A phone scanned a checkpoint, with GPS where available | QR-Patrol Base: $59/month for 1–3 guards, $116/month for 4–9 (monthly billing); NFC tags $19 per 10 | Phone can be handed to someone else; GPS weak indoors | QR-Patrol pricing |
| CCTV checkpoint review on the existing NVR | A person crossed a marked line at a checkpoint at a recorded time | No extra hardware if a camera already covers the spot | Needs light or IR at the spot, correct NVR clock, someone to review | Hikvision smart playback guide |
| AI person detection at checkpoints | Same, filtered to people rather than any motion | Depends on camera/NVR generation; see adding AI to existing CCTV | Only as good as placement and lighting | — |
No rupee list price for a smartphone patrol app was found on an Indian vendor's own pricing page (checked 15 Oct 2026). QR-Patrol publishes its prices in US dollars.
What each method really proves
A register is a self-report. A guard who slept from 1 to 4 a.m. can write "02:00 OK, 03:00 OK" at 4:15. Nothing in the book can contradict him.
A guard-tour wand is better because the time stamp comes from the device. The In4solution reader listed above stores 60,000 records, per its vendor page. The eSSL GP-RFID-102 lists a 60,000-record store, USB 2.0 download and a 3.7 V rechargeable battery, per the Right Vision listing.
The wand's weakness is physical. A tag held by two screws can be removed and kept in the guard cabin. Then a "perfect" round is ten taps without leaving the chair. The reader's log looks the same either way.
A patrol app adds GPS and, on higher plans, photos and face verification. QR-Patrol's Pro plan lists face verification and "ManDown" alerts, per its pricing page. Inside a steel shed GPS is weak, so most of the proof rests on the scan, which a borrowed phone can also do.
A camera answers a different question: was a human body at that spot at that time? It does not care who holds the wand or the phone. It is the only method of the four where the guard does not control the evidence.
How to check a night round on the NVR you already have
Most Indian factories already record the gate, stores and dispatch at night. The missing piece is a quick way to search eight hours of footage.
Hikvision's guide "How to watch Smart Playback in NVR" (v1.0, dated 13 Dec 2018) describes the method. In smart playback, the NVR marks footage with motion or analytics events in red and plays it at normal speed. Footage without motion plays at 16× speed, and that speed is configurable, per the same guide.
The guide notes the speed function is supported by "almost all -K/-I/-super I series NVR" and not by -E/-Q series. It also says Dual-VCA must be enabled in the NVR for smart search results; in the web interface that switch is under Configuration → Video/Audio → Display Info. on Stream → Enable Dual-VCA, per the same guide.
Steps 1–3 below follow that Hikvision guide for the NVR's local (monitor) interface; step 4 is the owner's own check:
- Enter the System interface, open Event → Smart Event, pick the checkpoint camera, select Line Crossing, tick Enable Line Crossing Detection, click Draw Area, draw a line across the guard's path and click Apply.
- Next morning, open Playback, choose the camera and date, and press the Smart button at the bottom.
- Select the line-crossing icon in the middle of the screen and draw two points across the path. Matching footage is marked in red.
- Count the crossings between 22:00 and 06:00 against the round schedule.
Other NVR brands have similar search. Milesight's NVR manual says its Smart Search plays only the motion events inside an area you draw, works on a single channel at a time, and needs NVR firmware xx.9.0.10 or above (Milesight manual). Menu names differ by brand and firmware, so ask your installer for the exact path on your recorder.
Plain motion search also triggers on insects at the IR lamp, rain and swaying lights. Line crossing on the walking path, or a people-only filter on newer cameras, cuts that noise.
Worked ₹ example: one plant, eight checkpoints, three night guards
Assume a plant with eight checkpoints (main gate, two store doors, scrap yard, dispatch dock, compressor room, DG set, rear wall) and a 22:00–06:00 night shift. Four of the eight already sit inside an existing camera's view.
| Option | One-time (₹) | Recurring | What the owner sees next morning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Register only | Cost of a register | None | Handwritten times |
| 1 RFID wand + 8 tags | ₹9,900–14,550 per reader (listed above) plus tags | None | Download of tag times, if someone downloads it |
| Patrol app, 3 guards | Tags: $19 per 10 NFC tags | $59/month (QR-Patrol Base, 1–3 guards, monthly billing) | App report with scan times |
| NVR line-crossing at the 4 covered checkpoints | ₹0 extra hardware | Review time each morning | Red events on the timeline per checkpoint |
| Wand + tags moved into camera view | Reader price above | Review time | Each tag read matched to a clip |
The last row is the recommendation. Mount the remaining tags where an existing camera can see the reader touching them, or add a camera at a checkpoint that matters. A tag read with no person on video at that minute is a red flag that costs nothing to spot.
What breaks in a factory at night
- Darkness at the checkpoint. IR range on a datasheet assumes a clear view. A store door in shadow behind racks may show only a blur. See night and low-light cameras on a shop floor.
- Wrong NVR clock. If the recorder has drifted 20 minutes, a clip will not line up with the wand's log. Set NTP and check it after power cuts.
- Short retention. If the NVR overwrites in seven days, a complaint raised in week two has no footage. See how long a factory must keep CCTV footage.
- Mobile signal inside sheds. GPRS readers and patrol apps upload only where Jio or Airtel reach. Offline readers keep the log until download.
- The guard post itself. A camera on the gate cabin is the direct answer to "did he sleep?" Tell staff and the agency where cameras are, under your worker CCTV notice.
What the law says about your agency's guards
The Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005 requires anyone running a private security agency to hold a licence, per section 4 (India Code, text as on 15 May 2026). Running one without a licence carries up to one year's imprisonment or a fine up to ₹25,000, per section 20.
Section 13(1)(k) lets the Controlling Authority cancel a licence where there have been repeated instances of the agency's guards failing to provide security, gross negligence, or being "habitually drunk or indisciplined". Section 17 requires every guard to carry a photo identity card issued by the agency.
The Act does not prescribe any method for verifying patrol rounds; the word "patrol" does not appear in its text (checked 15 Oct 2026). How you verify rounds is a matter for your contract with the agency. Write the method, the checkpoints and the review into that contract.
When to call the installer and what to ask the agency
Ask the installer three things: which cameras already cover your checkpoints, whether your NVR model supports line crossing and smart playback on its current firmware, and whether the clock syncs to NTP.
Ask the agency to agree in writing to the round schedule, to the checkpoint list, and to camera review as evidence of a missed round. Agree what happens after the first, second and third miss.
Where Mama fits
Mama reads the cameras a factory already has over RTSP/ONVIF and writes the owner a short morning note about the floor: where machine hours went idle. It is built around production, not guard surveillance, but it starts from the same cameras this page relies on. See askthemama.com. Leave an email or phone in the form below.
FAQ
How do I know if my security guard is sleeping at night? Point a camera at the guard post and place round checkpoints inside camera views. Next morning, use your NVR's smart or motion search on those cameras for the night hours. A register or a wand alone cannot show it, because the guard controls the pen and can carry a loose tag.
What is a guard tour system? A guard tour system is a handheld reader or phone app that logs the time a guard scans fixed tags along a route. Indian vendor pages listed offline RFID readers at ₹9,900–14,550 on 15 Oct 2026, per the In4solution and Goldline listings.
How does a guard patrol system work? Tags or QR labels are fixed at checkpoints. The guard scans each one with a reader or phone, and the device records the time. Offline readers are downloaded over USB; GPRS readers and apps send scans as they happen where there is mobile signal.
Can CCTV detect a sleeping guard? CCTV records whether the guard post is occupied and whether anyone crossed a checkpoint line. On Hikvision NVRs, smart playback plays motion at normal speed and empty footage at 16× speed, per Hikvision's guide. It shows absence of movement, not sleep itself, so someone still has to look.
