Factory Cameras in Pune-Chakan: What Auto-Belt Plants Actually Install
In Chakan and Talegaon, your customer writes the camera spec, not the factory inspector. A 40-camera Tier-2 plant typically budgets roughly ₹6,000–₹15,000 per installed camera plus a ₹35,000–₹60,000 recorder-and-switch block, GST 18% extra — with retention driven by the OEM audit and Maharashtra's 45-day women's night-shift rule.
If you run a 200–1,000 worker auto-component plant in Chakan MIDC, Talegaon, Ranjangaon or Bhosari, you are not buying cameras the way a warehouse or a rice mill buys them. Your buyer walks your floor. That single fact changes the spec, the retention, the storage architecture and the vendor you should pick.

- MIDC power is the reliability problem, not the cameras. A DG changeover of a few seconds reboots an unprotected switch and NVR — you lose the exact minutes you most wanted recorded.
- Maharashtra sets a retention floor for women's night shifts. Rule 102-B, notified 3 October 2025 under the Maharashtra Factories (Second Amendment) Rules, 2025, requires CCTV with recordings preserved at least 45 days, scoped to women's night work, 7 p.m.–6 a.m. (SCC Online).
- From 1 April 2026 the hardware market itself changed. CCTV sold in India must conform to MeitY's Essential Requirements under the compulsory-registration regime — no sale of non-conforming cameras is permitted (SecurityUpdate). Enforcement bites hardest in government and critical-infrastructure procurement, but it reshapes what your integrator can legally stock.
Why the Chakan spec is written by your customer
Everywhere else in India, a camera conversation starts with theft or an inspector. In the Pune belt it starts with a supplier audit.
To hold an OEM or Tier-1 line you generally need IATF 16949 certification plus that customer's own customer-specific requirements (CSRs). Neither mandates CCTV — no clause in IATF 16949 names it, and any vendor telling you otherwise is overselling. The practical consequence for your quote: an auditor asking "show me this ran correctly on night shift three weeks ago" sets your retention window, and retention sets your storage cost more than resolution does. Decide the window before you let a vendor size the NVR.
The clause most Chakan vendors never mention
Here is the cluster-specific trap. Component plants around Chakan routinely run customer-owned tooling, dies, fixtures and pre-launch parts under confidentiality terms in the supply agreement. Those terms commonly restrict photography, imaging and the transfer of images of customer parts and tooling to third parties. The exact wording is contract-specific — this is not a rule you can look up, it is a document you have to read.
A camera recording that bay is producing exactly such images. So before you sign:
- Read your CSR and NDA, not the vendor's brochure. Ask your customer's SQA contact in writing whether video of their tooling bay may be recorded, and whether it may leave your premises.

The workable Chakan architecture is usually local recording, local analytics, selective export — full coverage of gates, aisles, dispatch and general assembly, with camera-free or on-prem-only zones where the customer's IP sits.
MIDC power and connectivity: what actually breaks the system
Your cameras will rarely fail. Your power chain will.
- DG changeover blindness. A cut plus a few seconds of generator changeover reboots the switch, the NVR and the router. Cameras come back a minute or two later; that gap tends to land at night. Put the NVR, PoE switch and router on a UPS — not the cameras. Cameras draw power from the switch, so protecting the switch protects everything downstream.
- PoE budget, not port count. A fixed dome sits inside 802.3af (15.4 W at the switch port, 12.95 W delivered); add IR illuminators or a heated outdoor housing and you need 802.3at PoE+ (30 W / 25.5 W); a yard PTZ can need 802.3bt (up to 60–90 W). - Uplink for alerts. Chakan and Talegaon have serviceable fibre, but a single ISP line through one MIDC road cut takes your remote view with it. Two Chakan-specific budget lines that generic guides miss: 90-day retention costs real disk if your OEM asks for it, and long yard-to-panel-room cable runs on plots of one to three acres can add a meaningful per-camera premium in cable, conduit and labour alone — ask for cabling priced per metre so you can see it. Both work. They fail differently, and the difference matters more in an audit-driven cluster.

The pragmatic Chakan answer for a single-plant Tier-2: local integrator for cabling and installation, with hardware and software you chose yourself and can source from anyone. The night shift is where the law bites
Chakan runs on shifts, and OEM demand spikes force third shifts. If any of those shifts include women, Maharashtra's Factories (Second Amendment) Rules, 2025 apply: Rule 102-B requires continuous CCTV covering the workplace and access routes during 7 p.m.–6 a.m., with recordings preserved at least 45 days, plus written consent retained three years, at least two women on duty, well-lit pathways, and secure pick-up and drop (King Stubb & Kasiva).

The national frame points the same way. The Factories Act 1948 was repealed on 21 November 2025 when the OSH Code 2020 was brought into force, and the OSH Central Rules, 2026 followed on 8 May 2026 — those rules likewise require workplaces to be equipped with CCTV surveillance where women work night or non-standard hours. What cameras will not do for a Chakan plant
Honesty first, because the vendor blogs will not give you this.
- They will not prove part quality. Cameras evidence observable behaviour — PPE, sequence, station occupancy, andon response. Dimensional conformance stays with your gauges, CMM, PPAP and control plans.
- They will not pass an audit for you. No clause in IATF 16949 requires CCTV. A camera turns an assertion into evidence; it does not turn a broken process into a conforming one.
- They will not fix line balance. Video shows you where WIP piles up. Somebody still has to re-balance the line and hold the fix.
- They can create a labour problem. Individual operator scoring is an industrial-relations minefield in the Pune belt, which has a long union history. - AI detection is probabilistic. Treat helmet or intrusion alerts as signals to verify, not verdicts, and never let a vendor demo convince you otherwise.
Where cameras genuinely earn in this cluster: audit evidence across all three shifts, dispatch and gate reconciliation, downtime you would otherwise learn about from a missed dispatch, and night-shift coverage that is legally required anyway. That is three jobs from one cable run — which is the actual economic case, not "security".

Does an OEM audit require CCTV in Chakan? No standard mandates it. IATF 16949 has no CCTV clause. What auditors require is demonstrable process adherence at the station across all shifts, and recorded video is one accepted way to show it. Local integrator or a national brand? For a single Chakan plant, a local integrator for cabling and installation usually wins on price and response time. Will cameras survive MIDC power cuts? Only if you protect the recorder, PoE switch and router with a UPS. Cameras themselves draw power through the switch. Without that, a diesel-generator changeover reboots the whole chain and you lose the minutes you most wanted recorded — typically at night.
