Will AI Analytics Work With My Existing CP Plus, Prama/Hikvision, Matrix or Sparsh NVR?
Usually yes. As of 15 Oct 2026, AI software can read each camera directly or pull the channels through the NVR. The NVR route is capped by the recorder's outgoing bandwidth: 36 Mbps on a CP Plus CP-UNR-4K2162-V3 with its AI on, and 160 Mbps on a Prama PT-NRAS2E16-K8, per vendor datasheets.

This page is about the recorder as a source for analytics. Which camera brand records on which NVR brand is a different question, covered in the camera × NVR ONVIF matrix. The retrofit guide covers resolution, sightlines and the analytics box itself.

Two ways AI reads an existing system
Camera direct. The analytics box opens each camera's own RTSP stream, usually the sub-stream. The NVR keeps recording as before and carries no extra load. Each camera's path is on the RTSP/ONVIF cheat sheet.
Through the NVR. The analytics box asks the recorder for channel 1, channel 2 and so on. The cameras send one stream to the NVR, and the NVR forwards it. Every forwarded stream counts against the NVR's outgoing bandwidth, which is shared with the guard-room client, phone apps and remote viewing.
The NVR route is convenient when cameras sit on the NVR's built-in PoE ports, in a subnet the rest of the plant cannot reach. The camera route is safer when the NVR's outgoing figure is small.
NVR by NVR: can analytics pull from it?
"ONVIF device" means the NVR model itself is listed as an ONVIF device, so a client can discover its channels and ask for stream addresses. "ONVIF client" only means it can add other brands' cameras.

Verdicts, in plain words. "Yes": the exact model has a documented route out (a vendor RTSP path or its own ONVIF device listing) and its outgoing bandwidth exceeds the 80 Mbps worked-check load below. "Yes, with limits": the bandwidth fits only sub-streams, or the exact model has no documented route, so ask the installer or vendor. "Read the cameras directly": no NVR-side route is documented, so go camera by camera.
How much the NVR can forward: a worked check
Assumptions, not vendor figures: 16 cameras, 4 Mbps per main stream, 1 Mbps per sub-stream (settings as on the sub-stream page), and one guard-room client watching all 16 sub-streams.
| What the NVR forwards | Load (Mbps) | CP Plus 4K2162-V3, AI on (36) | CP Plus 4K2162-V3, AI off (72) | Prama PT-NR2A16-Q1 (80) | Prama PT-NRAS2E16-K8 (160) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI on 16 sub-streams + guard room | 16 + 16 = 32 | Fits, 4 spare | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| AI on 16 main streams + guard room | 64 + 16 = 80 | Over by 44 | Over by 8 | At the limit | Fits |
The lesson for an owner: on a value-series NVR, analytics through the recorder means sub-streams only. Turning on the recorder's own AI halves CP Plus's figure on this model (72 to 36 Mbps, per its datasheet).
Where brands differ
- Hikvision vs Prama. Hikvision publishes one RTSP pattern for NVRs, DVRs, cameras and encoders:
rtsp://user:pass@nvr-ip:port/Streaming/channels/101is channel 1 main,102its sub-stream. Prama's NVR pages list RTSP as a protocol but print no path (checked 15 Oct 2026). Prama NVRs are, however, listed as ONVIF devices with Profiles G and S, so an ONVIF client can ask the NVR for each channel's stream address. Full detail: Prama/Hikvision RTSP guide. - CP Plus. The NVR manual sets the RTSP port at 554 under Manage > Network > Connection and offers RTSP over TLS, but gives no channel URL (checked 15 Oct 2026). Several CP Plus NVRs carry ONVIF device listings: our filter found 65 CP-UNR listings, 33 tested since 15 Oct 2023, the four newest (Apr–Jun 2026) with Profiles G, M, S and T.
- Matrix. The NVR1601XS sheet counts "streaming to VMS" in its uplink figure and lists RTP/RTSP, but Matrix publishes no NVR channel path, and no Matrix NVR is listed as an ONVIF device (checked 15 Oct 2026). The 9 + 1 simultaneous log-ins also cap how many clients can pull at once.
- Sparsh. The category page says the NVR "Supports ONVIF Profiles S, G & T". ONVIF lists Sparsh NVRs only as clients, for adding cameras, not as devices (checked 15 Oct 2026). Read Sparsh cameras directly.
Steps before you sign for analytics
- Write down the NVR model with its full suffix from the label (V2, V3, P16 and /S are different products).
- Look up its outgoing bandwidth on the datasheet. If it is under about 4 Mbps × your camera count, plan on sub-streams or camera-direct reads.
- Check whether the recorder's own AI is on. On CP Plus 4K2162-V3 it halves the outgoing figure.
- Test one channel in VLC from the NVR (Hikvision path) or via ONVIF discovery (Prama, CP Plus) before anyone quotes 16 channels.
- For old analogue DVRs, the logic is the same but limits are tighter: see analogue CCTV on a DVR.
What breaks in a factory
- One 100 Mbps port. The CP-UNR-4K2082-V3 has a single 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port. Recording traffic, viewers and analytics all share it.
- Heat. CP Plus and Hikvision rate these NVRs at −10 to +55 °C. Matrix rates the NVR1601XS at 0 to +45 °C. A closed cabinet near a furnace or compressor room can exceed that in May.
- Power cuts. When the NVR reboots, every stream it forwards drops at once; camera-direct reads drop only if the cameras' PoE source also loses power, and that includes the NVR's own PoE ports. Put both on a UPS.
- PoE ports on a private subnet. Cameras on an NVR's built-in PoE ports are often unreachable from the plant LAN, which forces the NVR route.
When to call the installer / what to ask the vendor
Call the installer for admin access to the NVR and every camera, the IP plan, and whether cameras sit on the NVR's PoE ports. Ask the vendor for the NVR-side RTSP path on your firmware, the outgoing bandwidth with built-in AI on and off, and the maximum simultaneous stream connections.
Mama reads existing cameras over standard RTSP or ONVIF and tells the owner each morning how long each machine stood idle. More at askthemama.com. Leave an email or phone in the form below.
FAQ
Can I get an RTSP stream from my NVR instead of each camera?
On Hikvision, yes: Hikvision's support article gives /Streaming/channels/101 on the NVR's IP for channel 1 main. Prama and CP Plus publish no NVR channel path; where the exact NVR model is listed as an ONVIF device, use ONVIF discovery on the NVR instead.
Do I need to replace my NVR to add AI analytics? No, in all nine models above. At worst the analytics reads the cameras directly and the NVR keeps recording.
Will pulling streams from the NVR affect recording? It uses the NVR's outgoing bandwidth, which is separate from its incoming and recording figures on these datasheets. Stay under the outgoing figure, leaving room for viewers.
