How to See Machine Idle Hours From Your Phone (Without Sensors)
"How can I see if my machines are running when I'm not at the factory?" As of 15 Oct 2026, five routes exist; three give idle-hour totals on a phone. CCTV live view shows a moment, and Hikvision caps P2P live view at 5 minutes. Controller data needs networked CNCs; camera analytics needs no sensors.

The five routes, side by side
| Route | What you see on the phone | Idle hours as a number? | Setup cost (₹, see notes) | Effort | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. CCTV live view (Hik-Connect, gCMOB, DMSS-type apps) | Live picture of one camera at a time | No: a moment, not a total | ~0 if cameras and NVR exist | Low, unless CGNAT blocks it | Hikvision support |
| 2. CNC controller data (MTConnect, OPC UA, FOCAS) | Machine status, alarms, overrides in a browser | Yes, per machine | Quote only; depends on control and options | High: builder, IT, network | FANUC MT-LINK i |
| 3. Current clamps / IoT sensor subscription | Run / idle / off timeline and alerts | Yes, per machine | ₹489 per bare clamp; subscriptions ~₹9,079–13,316 per machine per month | Medium: electrician, panel access | Probots, FourJaw, GlobalReader |
| 4. Camera-based utilisation analytics | Idle hours per machine, usually as a report | Yes, estimated, within the camera's view | Existing cameras reused; ₹2,301 for one new 2 MP IP camera (one listing) plus compute and licence | Medium: placement, network | IndiaMART listing |
| 5. Supervisor messages | "All machines running" text | Only what the supervisor writes | ~0 | Low for you, a daily chore for them | — |
Route by route: what it tells you and what it doesn't
1. CCTV live view
Most owners already have this. Open the NVR app, pick a camera, and you see whether a spindle is turning right now.
What it does not tell you is how long that machine stood yesterday. Live view is a snapshot; nobody watches eight cameras for eight hours.
Hikvision's own support page says the 5-minute timeout on Hik-Connect live view is intentional, to reduce cellular bandwidth use (last modified 5 Oct 2022). Hikvision's Hik-Partner Pro manual adds that devices added through Hik-Connect without DDNS stream for up to five minutes, while devices added by IP or domain name have no time limit.
Motion alerts do not fix this: an idle machine with people walking past it still "moves".
2. CNC controller data
Newer CNCs can report their own state. MTConnect is a published ANSI standard (ANSI/MTC1.4-2018) and OPC 40501-1, release 1.02.0, covers machine monitoring and job management for machine tools.
On FANUC controls, FANUC America says MT-LINK i collects data "using a PC and an Ethernet connection", can monitor "from one to two thousand machines", and the data "can be viewed using web browsers or a tablet device" (FANUC America, checked 15 Oct 2026). The same page says "some legacy FANUC CNCs" connect only through an Ethernet converter.
The catch for a phone: the data sits on a PC inside the plant. Seeing it from home means a secure route in (see the CGNAT section below). Old lathes, presses and pre-network controls give nothing here; read tracking old CNCs without a PLC for those.
3. Current clamps and IoT sensor subscriptions
A split-core current clamp on the supply turns current into run, idle and off. The bare clamp is cheap: an SCT-013-030 (30 A) was listed at ₹489 including GST by Probots on 15 Oct 2026. The logger, the licensed electrician, the power-down and the app cost more.
Packaged subscriptions bundle the device and the phone view. FourJaw lists £72 per machine per month on its Standard plan billed annually, with a five-machine minimum, all hardware included and volume discounts from 10 machines (FourJaw, checked 15 Oct 2026). GlobalReader lists "starting from €125 per machine/month" with hardware and "machine status alert notifications" included (GlobalReader, checked 15 Oct 2026). At RBI reference rates for 14 Oct 2026 (£1 = ₹126.10, €1 = ₹106.53), that is about ₹9,079 and ₹13,316 per machine per month, before Indian taxes and import costs. These are foreign list prices, not Indian quotes.
The title of this page says "without sensors" because many owners cannot open panels under OEM or AMC terms. If you can, sensors are precise about running versus stopped and silent about why.
4. Camera-based utilisation analytics
Software watches the cameras you already have, reads a running cue (spindle motion, ram stroke, stack light, parts leaving) and adds up idle minutes per machine. Nothing touches the machine. Details in running AI on existing CCTV.
You get a number ("Press 3 idle 2 h 40 min yesterday"), not a live picture you must watch. Limits are real: no view means no data, a closed guard hides the cue, powered-but-idle can look like running when nothing visible moves, and the figure is an estimate, not a controller timestamp.
5. Supervisor updates
A message from the floor costs nothing and carries reasons ("waiting for material"). It is also written by the person whose shift it describes, sent when they remember, and rarely includes the 10-minute stops that add up.
Worked ₹ example: 10 machines, first month
Assume a shop with 10 machines, an existing NVR with cameras that see 6 of them, and a machine hour rate of ₹800 (illustrative; work out your own with the machine hour rate calculator).
| Route for 10 machines | One-time (₹) | Monthly (₹) | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live view only | 0 | 0 | Existing app; gives no idle-hour total |
| Sensor subscription, UK list | 0 listed (hardware in plan) | 90,790 | £72 × 10 at ₹126.10 (FourJaw Standard list price; page offers volume discounts at 10+ machines) |
| Sensor subscription, EU list | 0 listed (hardware in price) | 1,33,158 | €125 × 10 at ₹106.53 (GlobalReader "starting from" price) |
| Camera analytics: 2 new cameras for the 4 unseen machines | 4,602 + install | licence per vendor quote | ₹2,301 × 2 (one listing); assume cabling and mounting extra |
| Supervisor updates | 0 | 0 | Assumes no extra staff time |
At ₹800 an hour, one idle hour a day found on each of 10 machines is ₹8,000 a day, ₹2,00,000 over 25 working days (illustrative). That is the number to set against any monthly line above.
What breaks remote viewing in a factory
- CGNAT. If your router's WAN IP falls in 100.64.0.0/10, the block RFC 6598 reserves for carrier-grade NAT, port forwarding to the NVR will not work. Fixes and risks are in remote viewing behind Jio/Airtel CGNAT.
- Upload bandwidth. Several main streams over a fibre's upload choke quickly. Dual-stream cameras exist for this: the CP Plus 2 MP IP camera in the listing above advertises "dual-stream encoding", so phones can pull the lighter sub-stream. Size the link with the CCTV upload bandwidth calculator.
- Power cuts. After a mains drop the ONT, router and NVR reboot in different orders, and the app shows "offline" until all three are up. Keep them on the same UPS.
- Night lighting. Live view and camera analytics both degrade on an unlit night shift.
- People in frame. Cameras pointed at machines also see workers; a worker CCTV notice under DPDP is the safe course, with aggregate counts only.
When to call the installer / what to ask
Ask the installer: which P2P account owns your NVR (it should be the company's), whether sub-streams are enabled for mobile, and which machines no camera sees. Ask the CNC builder: the exact control model, whether an Ethernet data option is fitted, and what it costs to enable.
Where Mama fits
Mama is one camera-based option for route 4. It reads a factory's existing cameras over RTSP/ONVIF, or added ones, and every morning the owner gets a short plain-language note on which machines sat idle yesterday and roughly for how long. It watches machines, counts people only in aggregate and never ranks operators. It cannot see inside a closed guard or read alarm codes. Leave an email or phone in the form below.
FAQ
How can I check if my factory machines are running from my phone? For a quick look, open your NVR's mobile app and view the camera on that machine. For idle hours as a number, you need controller data, sensors or camera analytics; live view alone only shows the moment you are watching.
Can I see CNC machine status on my phone? On networked controls, yes, through monitoring software; FANUC says MT-LINK i data can be viewed in web browsers or on a tablet. Older controls may need an Ethernet converter or offer nothing, and remote access needs a secure route into the plant network.
Why does Hik-Connect live view stop after 5 minutes? Hikvision says the 5-minute limit is intentional, to reduce cellular bandwidth. Its partner-app manual states that devices added by IP or domain name have no time limit, but that usually means port forwarding, which carries security risk and fails behind CGNAT.
