Spec resolution with DORI, not gut feel
Every rigorous camera guide converges on one standard: DORI (IEC 62676-4), which fixes how many pixels per metre of scene width you need for a given task.
- Detect — ~25 px/m ("someone is in this bay")
- Observe — ~63 px/m (posture, rough activity)
- Recognise — ~125 px/m (is this a person I know)
- Identify — ~250 px/m (read a badge, a plate, a label)
The formula is simple: horizontal pixels ÷ scene width in metres = px/m. A 4 MP sensor (2688 px wide) covering a 12 m bay yields ~224 px/m — enough to recognise a person, not to read a batch label at the far edge.
Now bind it to the zone, which the standard alone doesn't do. A "is anyone here" safety zone only needs detect-grade density — one cheap wide camera. A gate ANPR read or a QC label needs identify-grade ~250 px/m, and that forces either a close mount or a telephoto lens, not a 4K camera on a far wall. Detail is placement × pixel density, not the number on the box. Vendor claims vary; measure the scene width and do the arithmetic before you buy.
The 2026 rule that changes what you can even buy
Before you choose anything, know the constraint every Indian buyer now faces. New internet-connected CCTV sold in India increasingly must carry mandatory essential-requirements certification (STQC/BIS). Several Chinese OEMs — Hikvision and Dahua among them — have not cleared it and are being pushed off government and critical-infrastructure sites; already-installed units are generally grandfathered. Confirm the current certification status of any model before you commit, as the regime is still tightening through 2026.
Here is the non-obvious part. Buyers are being forced to re-select hardware anyway. The worst response is to panic and re-lock onto a single premium brand. The right response is the opposite: keep the hardware decision zone-by-zone across whatever certified cameras fit best, and put the intelligence in a brand-agnostic software layer above them. Compliance pressure is exactly why single-brand standardisation is the wrong reflex right now.
Dusty shed: ingress, impact, and cleaning beat everything
In grinding shops, textile units around clusters like Tirupur, cement handling and flour mills, grinding swarf and cotton lint pack the housing seams and film the glass grey within a fortnight.
IP66 means the enclosure is dust-tight and resistant to powerful water jets, defined by IEC 60529. The first digit "6" is dust-tight; the second is high-pressure jets.
But the rating protects the internals — the front glass still films over, and a camera that reads blurry after a month is almost always a dirty dome, not a dead sensor. In our own Mihnovka pilot, the first "faulty camera" complaint was exactly that: a filmed-over turret, cleared with a rag. Add an IK08–IK10 impact rating (IEC 62262) anywhere a forklift, flying debris or grinding sparks can reach, and put a dome-wipe on the maintenance rota. The cleaning schedule is part of the spec.
Hot foundry: operating temperature is the survival number
Near a furnace, arc-welding line or die-casting cell, the spec that decides survival is the operating temperature range, not the megapixel count. Standard cameras commonly rate to roughly −20 to +60 °C ambient; radiant heat close to molten metal blows straight past that ceiling and cooks the housing gasket and IR board first. Options, in rough order of cost: mount further back with a longer lens; use an industrial-rated unit (~ −30 to +60 °C); or fit an active air-blower or water-cooled housing for the hottest cells. Get the ambient temperature at the actual mounting point measured before you buy — this is the one place a wrong guess melts a camera, not just disappoints you.
Low-light night shift: IR, colour-at-night, and WDR
Indian plants run second and third shifts, and that is when a press-zone entry or a forklift near a worker is hardest to see. Three specs matter, and they are not interchangeable:
- IR (infrared) gives a clear mono image in near-total darkness — but no colour, so you lose the red of a warning light or the colour of a uniform.
- Colour-at-night keeps colour in low light via a large aperture (~f/1.0) and a more sensitive sensor, which helps identification.
- WDR (wide dynamic range) balances exposure when one frame holds both a sunlit yard and a dark floor. Insist on true WDR of ~120 dB or more — marketing "digital WDR" is far weaker (Axis on WDR).

Wide bay: size it by pixels, then count cameras
For a big open hall the instinct is "buy one big camera." Do the DORI arithmetic first. A single high-MP camera holds usable pixels on target only up to the distance where a helmet, a state light or a face drops below your task threshold. Mounting rule of thumb: 2.5–3 m (8–10 ft) indoors, 3–4.5 m (10–15 ft) outdoors — high enough to clear tampering, low enough to keep pixels on target.
Gate and vehicle: ANPR and PTZ do specialist jobs
A general camera at the main gate shows you a truck arrived, not which truck. Plate reading needs an ANPR/LPR camera with a shutter and IR tuned for fast, reflective plates — identify-grade density on the plate itself. For a large yard or weighbridge, a PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) lets one camera sweep and zoom on demand, at the cost of seeing one thing at a time, so pair it with a fixed overview. Fine detail: it's placement, not megapixels
For a batch label, a gauge or a QC defect, the win is identify-grade pixel density (~250 px/m) mounted close — not a 4K camera on a far wall. What actually breaks cameras in an Indian plant
Whatever you spec, the local conditions decide whether it survives:
- Load-shedding. The recorder and switch must ride outages. In our Mihnovka pilot a single grid outage from 11:08 to 12:58 killed the recorder for nearly two hours mid-shift — which is why we now put the NVR and PoE switch on a UPS as standard.
- Monsoon and washdown. IP66 handles outdoor and monsoon exposure. High-pressure hot-water washdown in food, pharma and dairy lines is a different, stricter spec: IP69K (ISO 20653). Don't under-spec a washdown zone with IP66.
- Heat. An un-cooled shed already stresses electronics before any furnace — mind the operating range everywhere, not only the foundry.
- Dust. The cleaning schedule is part of the spec.
- Compliance. Confirm STQC/BIS certification status per model for government-adjacent and critical sites (see above).
